Malaysian Police have taken six individuals into custody in connection with the murder of a Bangladeshi construction worker at a house in Kampung Jalan Yan near Guar Chempedak, local authorities said on Thursday.
Yan District Police Chief, Supt Mohamad Hamizi Abdullah, confirmed that two local men and four Bangladeshi nationals, aged between 29 and 44, were arrested. All were residing in the same house as the deceased.
“The incident reportedly occurred around 1pm when a 42-year-old local suspect allegedly scolded the 37-year-old Bangladeshi victim, who was his colleague, for arriving late to work,” Supt Hamizi said in a statement.
According to the police, the argument escalated when the suspect picked up a small iron piece. The victim, meanwhile, went to the kitchen and returned with a parang (machete) before swinging it at the suspect. The suspect dodged the attack, dropped the iron piece, then grabbed a cable wire and strangled the victim.
“During the struggle, the victim lost consciousness. The suspect later went to the police station to report the incident. Investigators found three ligature marks on the victim’s neck and a wound on his lip,” the police chief added.
Police have seized the parang, the cable wire, and the iron piece as evidence. All six detainees are employed as construction labourers, and authorities plan to seek remand orders on Saturday.
