A court has pronounced its verdict acquitting singer and BCB director Asif Akbar in a case filed over the allegation of keeping four bottles of foreign liquor in his possession.
On Monday, the court of Judge Ayesha Akter Moushumi of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka delivered this verdict. Earlier, on 3 March, after the conclusion of witness testimony in the case, Monday was fixed for presenting arguments and delivering the verdict. Asif Akbar was present in court during the hearing. The defence lawyer, Pradeep Kumar Devnath, confirmed this information.
The case statement alleges that on 6 June 2018, singer Asif Akbar was arrested in connection with a case under the Information and Communication Technology Act at the office of R&B Entertainment on Panthapath, under Tejgaon Police Station.
At the time of arrest, four bottles of illegal tequila were found in Asif Akbar’s office room. After the liquor was found, it was sent to the Department of Narcotics Control for testing. On 23 July 2019, Sub-Inspector Prashanta Kumar Sikder of the Cyber Investigation Branch of CID police filed the case at Tejgaon Police Station in the capital on charges of possessing foreign liquor without a license.
After investigating the case, on 13 October 2019, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Jamal Uddin of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police, submitted a charge sheet against him.
On 25 November 2024, the court framed charges against him and ordered the trial to begin. In this case, the court has concluded recording the testimony of three witnesses so far.
