Simon Taufel is set to play a prominent role in the twelfth season of the Bangladesh Premier League, with the former elite ICC umpire confirmed as a key member of the tournament’s technical committee as franchises finalise their backroom structures.

Taufel, widely regarded as one of the most influential modern officials, joins a three man group that also includes SM Rokibul Hasan and Abhi Anwar. His appointment is being viewed inside the league as a statement of intent, with officials aiming to tighten regulatory standards and improve match operations. One BPL source described him as “a benchmark for officiating quality who brings credibility and clarity wherever he works.”

His arrival coincides with significant movement elsewhere. Chattogram Royals had initially brought in Habibul Bashar Sumon as manager and mentor, but he has stepped down to take his place alongside Taufel on the technical committee.

The league has expanded its commentary group, with Ramiz Raja and Waqar Younis expected from Pakistan, and Michael Gough and Danny Morrison also joining the broadcast team.

Coaching appointments across the competition have been finalised. Mominul Haque will lead Chattogram as head coach, supported by Nazmul Hossain Milon and Ashraful Islam Zico. Rangpur have confirmed Mickey Arthur as head coach, with Mohammad Ashraful as assistant coach, Shahriar Nafees as batting coach and Mohammad Rafique overseeing spin bowling. Hannan Sarkar will guide Rajshahi, Toby Rutherford takes charge of Dhaka Capitals, Sohel Islam leads Sylhet and Khaled Mahmud Sujon heads Noakhali.

But it is Taufel’s presence that stands out most. His track record in officiating development suggests the BPL technical committee will carry greater influence this season, with expectations rising around consistency, match protocols and the overall professional tone of the competition.
