Agitated locals vandalised and set fire to the house of a former Jubo Dal leader in Gaibandha’s Saghata upazila following the death of a Chhatra Shibir leader.
Protesters blocked roads and staged demonstrations demanding justice on Sunday. They later attacked the residence of Mukul, former president of Bonarpara Jubo Dal, vandalising and setting it ablaze.
Police later rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Earlier the same day, Saifullah Bari, president of Bonarpara Union Chhatra Shibir, was killed in a clash over formation of a school management committee. Another man, Salauddin, was critically injured.
Local sources said Mukul was expelled from the party after the incident, according to Gaibandha district Jubo Dal general secretary Abdur Razzak Bhuttu.
Saghata Fire Service official Md Tofazzal Hossain said protesters torched the houses of Mukul and his brother Palash around 7pm. Firefighters arrived but flames had already spread, burning several nearby homes. Losses were estimated at Tk8 lakh, though Tk15 lakh worth of goods were salvaged after an hour-long effort.
Police said investigations are underway into both the killing and the arson, and legal action will follow.
