Iran left a handwritten message inside their SoFi Stadium dressing room on Sunday after a 0-0 draw with Belgium kept their World Cup knockout hopes alive and closed another chapter in a difficult tournament campaign off the pitch.
The note came after Iran completed their second Group G match in Los Angeles. The side have played both games at SoFi Stadium before returning each time to their base in Tijuana, Mexico. Travel restrictions have shaped much of their tournament schedule and several staff members and officials have faced entry bans.
Iran’s football federation later released the message.
“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast.”
“Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality.”
“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor, and leave with dignity.”
The note also thanked supporters who gave their “heart, voice and soul” during the team’s two matches in the city. It ended with a message that called for peace, respect and friendship among nations.
Iran have repeatedly raised concerns over the travel arrangements during the tournament. Coach Amir Ghalenoei criticised the restrictions several times and argued that his players faced challenges that other teams had not encountered.
The squad’s movement between Mexico and the United States has remained under review throughout the tournament. United States officials have continued discussions over whether they could ease some restrictions.
The result against Belgium kept Iran in the race for the last 16. Iran opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium before holding Belgium in the same venue.
They now travel to Seattle for their final group match against Egypt with qualification still within reach.
