Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan says strong performances in the Bangladesh Premier League could reopen the door to the national team as he targets the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking on the “Off Screen With Sayeed Zaman” podcast, Shakib said the Bangladesh Cricket Board, selectors and team management would decide whether he still fits into the national side’s plans.
“That decision belongs to the BCB, the team management, and the selectors. Whether I’m still good enough to play, whether they are considering me, or whether they think I can still contribute to the team, those are their decisions.”
Shakib made it clear that he now prioritises ODI cricket over the other formats. The all-rounder said he would welcome a final Test or T20I series, but he still believes he can contribute in the 50-over game.
“I’m not too concerned about Tests or T20s. It would feel nice if I could finish those formats with one final series. Since the ODI World Cup is next year, if the BCB has plans involving me and if everything gets sorted out this year, then the ODI World Cup could definitely be a possibility.”
The 38-year-old also hopes to return to Bangladesh this year and feature in the BPL. He believes domestic performances could strengthen his case for an international comeback.
“If I can return this year, play in the BPL, and perform well, then there would be a strong reason for the national team to think about me again.”
Shakib pointed to his recent performances in the ILT20 when asked about his confidence in returning to international cricket. He said regular franchise opportunities continue to motivate him.
“I wouldn’t have that confidence if my performances were poor. Alhamdulillah, I also played well in the last ILT20.”
The former captain admitted he has gained weight during a lengthy break from cricket and has already resumed training ahead of upcoming tournaments.
Shakib also opened up on his personal struggles away from cricket.
“I cannot even go back to the place where I was born. The place I want to visit the most, I cannot go there. That’s a very painful feeling.”
