Shakib Al Hasan says the Bangladesh Cricket Board under Aminul Islam Bulbul did not make a real effort to bring him back, even though many people spoke publicly about his return.
Shakib has not played international cricket since October 2024.
In the last 18 months, there has been constant discussion about his comeback. Earlier this year, his return was raised in a BCB board meeting. Former board directors had also spoken positively about bringing him back. But Bangladesh still played series against Pakistan and New Zealand without the star all rounder.
On April 7, the National Sports Council dissolved the BCB board led by Aminul Islam Bulbul and formed an ad hoc committee.
Speaking to Sportstar in Mumbai, Shakib said, “The previous board did show interest in bringing me back. But there is a big difference between saying something and actually making it happen. Even now, I hear that everyone wants me back. But sadly, no one has really taken any proper initiative.”
Shakib’s political role remains a major issue in his return.
He was an Awami League MP before the government fell on August 5, 2024. He now faces multiple legal cases, including murder allegations, along with accusations linked to share market fraud and cheque forgery.
Shakib had planned to return in October 2024 to play a farewell Test at Mirpur. He previously said he had approval from two government advisers but still could not come back.
Despite everything, he still hopes to return home soon.
“I haven’t thought too deeply about it yet. But I hope everything will be sorted by the end of the year. One thing is certain, I have to return to Bangladesh. The question is how soon. Hopefully, I can return by the end of this year.”
Now at 39, Shakib also said he is still considering life after cricket, with coaching, business, match refereeing, and politics all possible paths.
