Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said the situation at Bangladesh Bank marks the “formal beginning of a government-backed mob culture.

Calling the incident “unfortunate and completely unacceptable,” the Jamaat chief said that no one has the right to insult respected figures such as the central bank governor and his adviser in such a manner.

He made the remarks in a post of his verified Facebook page on Thursday morning.

In the Facebook post, he said that the country’s economy is already in dire straits under the grip of fascism, widespread corruption, extortion and syndicates. If such unwanted activities continue at the highest levels of state institutions like Bangladesh Bank, the remaining foundations of the economy will be destroyed.

He added that reports are already emerging of mobs being created in various state institutions to harass skilled, patriotic and qualified individuals in responsible positions.

He stressed that to build a truly democratic and non-discriminatory Bangladesh; such destructive activities must be stopped immediately. At the same time, he said, appointments to key government positions should be based on merit and patriotism, not party loyalty.
