Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has extended advance congratulations to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman as the incoming prime minister of Bangladesh.
Tarique paid a courtesy visit to the Jamaat ameer’s residence on Sunday as BNP is set to form the government after securing a two-thirds majority in the 13th parliamentary election. Jamaat is positioned to become a strong opposition party after winning a respectable number of seats.
Shafiqur posted a statement on his verified Facebook page after the meeting on Sunday.
The Jamaat ameer said Tarique’s visit to his residential office marked an important moment in the nation’s political journey, welcoming the engagement in a spirit of dialogue and responsibility.
In the post, he wrote, “We envision building a Bangladesh that is free from fascism, sovereign in its decision-making and founded upon justice. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, together with the 11-party alliance, remains committed to establishing a prosperous, stable and modern state grounded in democratic values and constitutional governance.”
He added, “We will cooperate fully on matters of national interest, yet we will discharge our constitutional duty as a firm and principled opposition. Where the government acts in the public interest, we will support. Where accountability is required, we will speak.”
Shafiqur further said, “Our objective is not confrontation but correction; not obstruction, but oversight. The people deserve a parliament that safeguards justice, protects rights and advances the nation with stability and confidence.”
