Several areas in Bangladesh observed Eid-ul-Adha on Wednesday in line with Saudi Arabia. These include different parts of Dhaka, Satkhira, Bogura, Patuakhali, Dinajpur, Chandpur, Moulvibazar, and other districts. The communities in these areas also follow Saudi Arabia’s schedule for Eid-ul-Fitr.
Dhaka
An Eid congregation was held at Samurai Convention Centre in Panthapath in the capital in line with Saudi Arabia. The Eid prayer was organised at 7:30am by Muslim Ummah Bangladesh. Several hundred worshippers joined the congregation.
Moulvibazar
An Eid-ul-Adha congregation was held in Moulvibazar following Saudi Arabia’s schedule. The prayer took place at 7:30am at Circuit House area in the town. Over a hundred local male and female worshippers attended. Imam Abdus Mawafik Chowdhury led the prayer.
After the prayer, sermons were delivered and special prayers were offered seeking peace, prosperity and welfare of the country, the nation and the global Muslim Ummah. Locals said a section of people in the area have been following Saudi Arabia’s schedule and observing Eid a day earlier for around 15 years.
Patuakhali
Around 25,000 people in 35 villages of Patuakhali observed Eid-ul-Adha a day earlier in line with Saudi Arabia. The main congregation was held at 8:30am at Badarpur Darbar Sharif field. Maulana Abdul Gani led the prayer.
The villages include Senar Hawla, Pashuri Buniya, Nij Hawla, Kankuni Para, Moudubi, Madanpura, Rajnagar, Boga, Dhourahbhanga, Surdi, Chandrapara, Dipasha, Shapla Khali, Konkodia, Amirabad, Nishanbaria, Itbaria, Naiya Patti, Tiyakhali, Tegachhia and South Debpur among others.
Khadem of Badarpur Darbar Sharif, Md Nazmul Hossain, said locals have been following Saudi Arabia’s schedule since 1928, starting fasting a day earlier. Following that tradition, they observed Eid a day earlier and are now performing animal sacrifice in line with the Middle East.
Bogura
An Eid-ul-Adha congregation was held in line with Saudi Arabia in Gabtali upazila of Bogura. Worshippers of different ages, including women and children, joined the prayer at 7:30am at the railway mosque near Gabtali railway station. Maulana Mizanur Rahman led the prayer.
Muslims from Gabtali, Kahalu and Dhunat upazilas also joined the congregation. Due to adverse weather, the prayer was delayed slightly and held inside the mosque instead of an open field, with around fifty worshippers present. Organisers said many people could not attend due to weather conditions.
Lakshmipur
Eid-ul-Adha was observed in 11 villages of Lakshmipur on Wednesday in line with Saudi Arabia. Thousands of worshippers from Ramganj, Raipur and Sadar upazilas took part.
In Ramganj, Eid prayers were held at Khanqah-e-Madania Qasemia Madrasa and Noagaon Bazaar South-East Eidgah field at 8:00am. Maulana Ruhul Amin led the main congregation.
Locals said followers of Maulana Ishaq (RA) have been observing religious festivals in line with Makkah and Madinah for nearly 40 years.
Sonargaon
People in 23 villages of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj observed Eid-ul-Azha in line with Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Preparations were completed in advance for Eid congregations across different areas.
Villages include Girdaim Westpara, Nayapur, Gonokbari, Gojaria Para and Konabari among others.
The main Eid congregation was held at 8:00am at Girdaim Westpara Jame Mosque. Additional congregations were held at Nayapur, Gonokbari, Gojaria Para and Konabari areas at 8:30am.
Girdaim Westpara Jame Mosque president Khandaker Riaz Uddin Master said they observe fasting and both Eid festivals every year in line with Saudi Arabia and have completed all arrangements to ensure a safe and proper environment for worshippers.
Nayapur village mosque Imam Kamruzzaman said around 20 families have been following Saudi Arabia’s schedule for fasting and Eid for years, continuing the same practice this year.
Satkhira
At least 15 villages in Satkhira observed Eid-ul-Azha in line with Saudi Arabia. A main congregation took place at Baitul Aman Jame Mosque in Bhadra Baukhola village of Satkhira Sadar at around 7:30am on Wednesday. Imam Maulana Mahbubur Rahman led the prayer.
Worshippers offered special prayers for peace, prosperity and unity of the Muslim Ummah after the congregation. Local sources said a section of Ahle Hadith followers in the district have been observing Eid with Saudi Arabia for over a decade, although most areas plan Eid based on local moon sighting.
Another Eid congregation in Satkhira took place at Baitul Aman Jame Mosque in Bhadra Baukhola village under Ahle Hadith followers. Worshippers said they have followed Saudi Arabia’s Eid schedule for more than a decade.
Imam Maulana Mahbubur Rahman said the practice reflects their belief that Eid can be observed based on moon sighting anywhere in the Muslim world.
Naogaon
In Naogaon’s Patnitala upazila, Eid-ul-Azha was observed in a festive atmosphere at Kolnipara in Nazipur municipality at around 8am. People from several upazilas including Porsha, Dhamoirhat, Mohadevpur, Sapahar, Badalgachhi and neighbouring Joypurhat joined the congregation.
Imam Maulana M Kamruzzaman led the prayer. Organisers said they have been following Saudi Arabia’s Eid schedule for the past decade, continuing a tradition of early observance.
Jamalpur
Around 20 villages in three upazilas of Jamalpur observed Eid-ul-Azha following Saudi Arabia. Heavy rain forced one congregation in Islampur upazila’s Rambhadra area to be held inside a house at 8:30am instead of an open field.
Separate Eid congregations were also held in several villages under Sarishabari, Islampur and Madarganj upazilas. Worshippers exchanged greetings and later prepared for Qurbani. Imams said they have long followed Saudi moon sighting for Eid observance.
Gaibandha
At least 20–21 worshippers from several villages in Palashbari upazila’s Monohorpur union observed Eid-ul-Azha on the rooftop of a private building at Taluk Ghorabandha village.
Despite heavy rain, people from different upazilas gathered for the prayer. Imam Hafiz Rezwan Islam Akand led the congregation. Locals said they have followed Saudi Arabia’s Eid timing for around 16 years.
Bhola
About 5,000 people across 10 villages in Bhola’s seven upazilas observed Eid-ul-Azha in line with Saudi Arabia. The main congregation took place at a private residence in Purba Ilisha village under Bhola Sadar.
Around 200 men and women from the Sureshwari Darbar joined the prayer. Organisers said they have long followed Saudi Arabia for Ramadan and Eid celebrations.
