Primary, junior secondary, and secondary schools across the country will begin a 38-day holiday starting this Thursday.
The Education Ministry issued a notification late Wednesday night, bringing an end to the uncertainty regarding whether educational institutions would remain open during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to separate notifications issued by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Secondary and Higher Education Division, the holiday period covers Ramadan, the birth anniversary of Sri Sri Harichand Thakur, Shab-e-Qadr, Jumu’atul-Wida, Eid-ul-Fitr, and Independence and National Day.
Under this schedule, all schools will remain closed until 26 March. As 26 March falls on a Thursday, followed by the weekend, regular classes are set to resume on 29 March.
The decision follows a period of legal and public debate. Initially, a lawyer filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking school closures during Ramadan.
On Sunday, the High Court directed that all government and private lower secondary and secondary institutions stay closed for the entire month.
However, this order was stayed on Monday by the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court, led by Chamber Judge Farah Mahbub.
While schools initially remained open following the stay order, the situation caused significant dissatisfaction among parents and other stakeholders, with many expressing their concerns on social media.
The government has now moved to formalise the closure from the first day of Ramadan.
