Police on Monday arrested two youths in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Monday morning over the alleged gang rape of an eighth-grade schoolgirl and an attempt to extort money by threatening to circulate a video of the assault on social media.
Police on Monday arrested two suspects in a case filed over the alleged gang rape of a eighth-grade schoolgirl at Charmarjal village in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi district.
The arrestees were identified as Dipu, 18, son of Joj Miah, and Rakib Hasan Rubel, 20, son of Rafiqul Islam. Both are residents of Kandapara in Marjal union.
According to police and the victim’s family, the 16-year-old girl went to meet Riam, 17, with whom she was in a relationship, on Saturday evening.
A group intercepted and assaulted them during the meeting. Riam fled, while the girl was allegedly taken to a secluded fallow field in the Char Marjal Dakshin Kandapara area.
Police said Dipu and Rubel allegedly raped the girl. Two other suspects later arrived at the scene, after which the first two fled.
The suspects also allegedly recorded the assault and demanded Tk10,000 from the girl, threatening to circulate the video on social media if the money was not paid.
The girl returned home at around 2:00am and informed her mother of the incident.
Her mother filed a case with Raipura Police Station on Sunday night, accusing five people, including Riam, of rape and extortion.
TM Faridul Alam, inspector (investigation) of Raipura Police Station, said Dipu and Rubel were arrested on Monday morning and sent to court in the afternoon.
“The victim has been sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for a medical examination,” he said.
Police drives were continuing to arrest the remaining suspects, he added.
