The Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division has ordered the removal of Nagarik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna’s name from the list of loan defaulters.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, passed the order on Monday after staying a High Court directive, Manna’s lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub said.
Following the order, there is no legal barrier to his participation in the election, his lawyer also said.
Earlier, Manna had filed a petition seeking a directive to remove his name from the loan defaulter list. On 24 December, a High Court bench dismissed Manna’s petition.
Later, on 28 December, Manna appealed the High Court’s ruling, the hearing for which was held on Monday.
On 10 December, the Bogura Baragola branch of Islami Bank issued a call-back notice to Afaku Cold Storage Limited. The notice, signed by branch manager Touhid Reza, was sent to the addresses of the organisation’s chairman Manna and Managing Director ABM Nazmul Kadir Shahjahan Chowdhury.
According to the notice, Manna owns 50 percent of Afaku Cold Storage, MD Nazmul Kadir owns 25 percent, and his wife and director Ismat Ara Laizu owns 25 percent. The notice instructed the organisation, located at Kichak Bazar in Shibganj, Bogura, to repay a total defaulted investment amount of Tk38.04 crore.
The notice also stated that if the full dues were not cleared by 18 December, the bank would be compelled to take legal action.
