Police have arrested a man identified as Samrat for allegedly killing six people over the past seven months in Savar, triggering shock and fear among local residents.
The arrest was made following an investigation by the Dhaka North Detective Police, which tracked the suspect using multiple CCTV clips, police said.
Investigators said Samrat confessed to the killings during initial interrogation.
Detective Police Inspector Saidul Islam said the suspect had long been seen loitering around the area of the Savar Model Police Station.
The series of killings came to light on 4 July last year, when police recovered the strangled body of an unidentified 65-year-old woman from behind the Savar Model Mosque.
Locals later identified the woman as a beggar who regularly stayed around the Savar bus stand and nearby footbridge.
In the months that followed, five more bodies were found inside an abandoned community centre close to the police station, heightening concerns over security in the area.
On Sunday afternoon, police recovered two charred bodies from the same building, believed to be those of a woman and a male child, although their identities could not be confirmed immediately due to severe burns.
Police said the discovery was made after local children and a Savar College student alerted authorities through the emergency service number.
Earlier, on 19 December, the body of a man was found inside a toilet on the second floor of the abandoned building.
On 11 October, police recovered the semi-naked body of an unidentified woman, estimated to be around 30 years old, from the same site.
An unidentified young man was also found dead there on 29 August, with his hands and feet tied, police records show.
The repeated recovery of bodies from a building located close to a police station has sparked anger and anxiety among residents, who have criticised the lack of preventive measures.
Locals are demanding a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible for the killings.
