Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman has affirmed that the government will not interfere in any way with media freedom or the professional work of journalists.
Speaking at a function organised in Dhaka today to mark the 31st founding anniversary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), the minister highlighted that the press has made a vital contribution to Bangladesh’s democratic progress.
He added that the government is committed to ensuring an independent and responsible media environment.
Acknowledging the essential role of the press, Andaleeve Rahman mentioned that the government’s present standing and the current level of democracy in Bangladesh owe equal credit to the media.
He assured journalists that they would enjoy free media during their tenure, reiterating that the government has no intention of interfering in journalism or media functions.
Also present at the function was State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury who announced that an initiative has been undertaken to increase the fund allocation for Journalists’ Welfare Trust from Tk6 crore to Tk25 crore for the welfare of journalists.
He said a required proposal has already been submitted and the matter discussed with the Ministry of Finance.
The event was attended by DRU leaders, journalist leaders, and journalists working across various media organisations.
