Chennai Super Kings produced a commanding all-round display to defeat Mumbai Indians by 103 runs in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium. Hardik Pandya’s decision to bowl first proved costly as the visitors posted a formidable 207 for 6 in their 20 overs. The target of 208 ultimately proved far beyond the five-time champions, who were bowled out for a meagre 104 in 19 overs.
The centrepiece of Chennai’s innings was yet another magnificent century from Sanju Samson, who has now scored two hundreds in IPL 2026. The right-handed batter was in imperious form, stroking an unbeaten 101 off just 54 deliveries at a blistering strike rate of 187.03. His knock was embellished with 10 fours and 6 sixes, and it stood as the decisive difference between the two sides on a flat Wankhede surface.
Several of Samson’s teammates made starts without capitalising on them. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (22), Dewald Brevis (21), Kartik Sharma (18), Jamie Overton (15) and Sarfaraz Khan (15) all reached double figures but failed to convert their starts into meaningful contributions — a worrying pattern that Chennai’s management will be keen to address.
Chasing 208, Mumbai Indians’ innings collapsed spectacularly, with Impact Substitute Akeal Hosein delivering the decisive blow. The left-arm spinner claimed four wickets, removing Danish Malewar (0), Naman Dhir (0), Tilak Varma (37) and the well-set Suryakumar Yadav (35) — the last two of whom had offered a glimmer of hope before Hosein ended their resistance.
Leg-spinner Noor Ahmad was equally devastating in a ruthless spell, dismissing Hardik Pandya (1) and Sherfane Rutherford (0) in consecutive deliveries to effectively seal the contest. AM Ghazanfar and Ashwani Kumar each took two wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner chipped in with one apiece. Hardik was the most expensive Mumbai bowler, conceding 38 runs from his two overs as Chennai batters took full advantage.
With their third victory of the campaign and six points to their name, Chennai Super Kings have climbed to fifth place in the IPL 2026 standings. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, continue to struggle, slipping to eighth position with just four points from seven matches — a run of form that will be a source of serious concern in their camp.
