Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has assured that top terrorists and extortionists will soon be brought to justice.
Salahuddin made these remarks during a press briefing following an exchange of views with officials from the Fire Service and Civil Defence at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room.
Regarding a recent shooting incident in Chattogram, Salahuddin stated that the involved terrorists have been identified, and various intelligence agencies are currently active. He revealed that a terrorist group had demanded extortion from a prominent businessman two months ago.
Despite the Chittagong Police Commissioner providing security and a police guard at the businessman’s residence, the group struck again two months later, this time using heavy weaponry.
Discussing legal and reform initiatives, the minister noted that a protection ordinance was issued during the final stages of the interim government. This ordinance was based on a clause in the July National Charter, an agreement to which all signatory political parties have consented.
Salahuddin emphasised that the government is committed to providing legal and constitutional protection to those who led and participated in the July mass uprising, and future decisions will be made in light of these pledges.
When questioned about the duration of army deployment, the Home Minister explained that the decision would be reached following high-level discussions.
He noted that the army itself does not wish to remain in the field indefinitely, as it impacts their training and other professional duties. While he could not provide a specific date for withdrawal, he stated that the forces must eventually be pulled back.
He added that the decision would also depend on an evaluation of how much law and order has improved since the current government took office.
On the future of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Salahuddin acknowledged a public demand for changes to the force’s name and uniform, a recommendation also featured in the July National Charter.
He affirmed that while RAB is a specialised force that remains necessary, decisions regarding its structure, jurisdiction, and accountability will be made based on current realities. The goal of these upcoming reviews is to ensure transparency and to secure the maximum level of service from the force.
