Blockade supporters have suspended an indefinitely called road blockade in Sajek Union of Baghaichhari Upazila in Rangamati for 48 hours following a request from the administration.

Meanwhile, Rangamati District Administration has declared Sajek Valley tourist centre temporarily closed until further notice, citing unavoidable reasons.

The suspension of the blockade was confirmed in a joint statement issued on Sunday evening by Karbari Association and Sajek Gono Adhikar Rokkha Committee.

The statement mentioned that the road blockade in Sajek was suspended for 48 hours on specific conditions based on a four-point set of demands. The organisations warned that if the conditions are breached, the road blockade will resume after the 48-hour period.

The four-point demands specify that armed members of Santu Larma-led JSS must be withdrawn within 48 hours, JSS members must refrain from issuing death threats to anyone, and the army administration must stop searching the houses of innocent civilians and harassing them.

Earlier on Sunday morning, blockade supporters picketed on the road in front of Ujo Bazar in Sajek by burning tyres.

They subsequently staged a demonstration by sitting on the road. Due to the indefinite blockade, long-distance buses and trucks were unable to operate, leaving the Sajek road completely stagnant.

In addition, Rangamati District Administration instructed all tourists currently residing in the Sajek tourist area to leave Sajek and safely return to their respective destinations by 5pm on Tuesday.
