The historic Osmani Udyan in Dhaka will reopen to the public on 19 October after nearly a decade of closure, following a Tk50 crore modernisation project undertaken by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the renovated park and the newly built July Smritistambha on the same day. The park will open to visitors following the inauguration ceremony and a civic gathering.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam announced the schedule on Sunday while chairing a preparatory meeting at the Secretariat.
He said the reopening would allow city residents to enjoy the park after almost 10 years.
A memorial named July Smritistambha has been built inside the park to honour the martyrs and fighters of the July-August student-led mass uprising.
According to the state minister, the memorial will offer visitors an opportunity to reflect on the historic uprising and the sacrifices of those who lost their lives.
The renovated park features walkways, family recreation spaces, a restaurant, a modern library, a children’s playground, artificial fountains and landscaped waterbodies.
Shahe Alam said DSCC was working around the clock to enhance the park’s appearance and ensure a pleasant environment for visitors.
Located next to the Secretariat, Osmani Udyan is undergoing final preparations ahead of its reopening.
The state minister expressed confidence that all arrangements would be completed in time for the inauguration.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, the secretary of the Local Government Division, senior officials and representatives of relevant agencies attended the meeting.
