The body of 52-year-old Miraj, who went missing after being crushed between two launches at the capital’s Sadarghat, was recovered by police two days after the incident. The remains have since been handed over to his family.
The body was found floating in the river on Friday evening, approximately half a kilometre from the Sadarghat terminal.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Atal of the Barishpur Police Outpost confirmed the recovery, stating that the body was sent to Mitford Hospital for identification by family members before being released.
The tragic accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon while passengers were using an engine-driven boat to board a launch in mid-river.
According to witnesses, as one launch suddenly began reversing to depart the terminal, the boat was crushed between the “Asa Jaoa-5” (Dhaka-Ilisha route) and “MV Zakir Samrat-3” (Dhaka-Deula-Ghoshherhat route).
The impact resulted in one passenger’s leg being severed from their body, while Miraj fell into the water and disappeared.
Another victim, Sohel, also lost his life in the same accident. His pregnant wife, Rubi, is currently undergoing treatment at Mitford Hospital.
Following the incident, Miraj’s brother, Sirajul Islam, filed a case at the Sadarghat Police Outpost.
SI Bashir Ahmed confirmed the legal action, noting that the case names seven to eight individuals, including employees of both launches. He added that legal proceedings against the accused are currently ongoing.
