Local Government Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan has said the ministry is committed to holding free, fair and impartial elections to local government bodies.

Speaking at a discussion in Narsingdi on Friday, he said the government plans to hold elections at five tiers of local government and wants to fulfil its responsibility by ensuring a credible electoral process.

“We are firmly committed to giving the people a fair and impartial local government election,” Moyeen Khan, also the BNP Standing Committee member, said.

He was addressing a programme organised by the Narsingdi district unit of BNP to mark the party’s 48th founding anniversary.

The minister said his ministry has responsibilities ranging from city corporations and municipalities to upazila and union parishads, and that it would work to discharge those duties properly.

“We want to give a fair and impartial election to the rural people of Bangladesh as well as the people living in city corporations,” he said.

Moyeen Khan sought cooperation, support and prayers from party leaders and activists to help him fulfil the responsibilities assigned to him by the prime minister.

“I seek your prayers so that I can properly discharge the great responsibility entrusted to me by the honourable prime minister,” he said.

Referring to the past 17 years, the minister said Bangladesh must be rebuilt from the devastation the country had suffered.

He said his responsibilities as local government minister had two key dimensions- rebuilding infrastructure and local government facilities across the country, and ensuring development for disadvantaged communities, particularly those living in rural areas.

The discussion was held at the auditorium of the Narsingdi Textile Board Institute and chaired by Narsingdi district BNP President and MP Khairul Kabir Khokon.

Narsingdi-3 (Shibpur) lawmaker and district BNP General Secretary Manjur Elahi, Narsingdi-5 (Raipura) lawmaker Ashraf Uddin Bakul, reserved women’s seat MP Advocate Shirin Sultana, and District Council Administrator and freedom fighter Toffazzal Hossain Master also addressed the programme.
