Rupert Grint has spoken out against the rise of fascism and far-right politics during the Berlin Film Festival, becoming the latest celebrity to address political issues at the event.
The British actor, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, was asked about the surge of far-right politics in the UK during a press conference for his new Finnish horror film, ‘Nightborn’.
“Obviously, I’m against it,” Grint said. “But I choose my moments when to speak. I think it’s hugely relevant now. You’ll hear from me.”
The question followed a trend at the festival, where several high-profile guests, including Michelle Yeoh and jury president Wim Wenders, declined to discuss politics, sparking debate among attendees and even prompting one to withdraw in protest. Grint’s comments came after he had previously spoken out regarding author J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views.
Grint was not the only festival figure to address political issues. Director Hannah Bergholm, whose film Nightborn was being presented, explained her decision to wear a watermelon pin in solidarity with Palestine. “As grown-up human beings, we have a responsibility to speak up against violence and injustice,” she said.
Screenwriter Ilja Rautsi added, “It’s important to shine a light on whatever issues we are facing because art is all about empathy. Politicians or millionaires who don’t do anything but cause problems, it’s maybe good to create some form of pressure, or just to raise awareness of what’s happening in the world, like in Ukraine or Palestine.”
Nightborn had its world premiere on Saturday night in Berlin. The supernatural horror, the second feature from Bergholm, was shot in Lithuania and follows a couple, Saga (Seida Haarla) and Jon (Grint), who move to an isolated house in the forest. Their marriage begins to strain following the birth of their son, who harbours a dark secret known only to Saga. Also present at the press conference were Haarla, producer Daniel Kuitunen, and composer Eicca Toppinen.
Ahead of the festival, Grint spoke to Variety about HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series. He reflected on the announcement of the new cast playing Harry, Hermione, and Ron, recalling his own beginnings on the franchise over 25 years ago.
“When they were announced, it really took me straight back to ’99,” he said. “It was such an exciting time. I do wish them all the best, it’s such a fun journey. But it’s quite strange and surreal. It didn’t feel that long ago that we wrapped.”
Grint also wrote a letter to Alistair Stout, who will play Ron Weasley in the series. He noted that the new cast’s experience would likely differ from his own, particularly as they will have to navigate the pressures of social media.
“It’s a long time, and there are definitely periods where you want to step away. But I have no regrets. It was a great time and I think they’ll have lots of good people around looking after them.”
