Brazil legend Rivaldo praised Lionel Messi after the Argentina captain inspired his side to a dramatic win over Egypt in the World Cup round of 16.
Argentina looked close to elimination after falling 2-0 behind. But the defending champions produced a stunning fightback to win 3-2 and book their place in the quarter finals.
Messi led the comeback with another brilliant display. He created the goal that brought Argentina back into the game. A few minutes later, he set up the equaliser before his team completed the turnaround in stoppage time.
After the match, Rivaldo shared his thoughts on social media. The former Brazil star praised Argentina’s spirit and Messi’s leadership.
“What a fighting spirit, what a desire to win, what a battle and dedication from everyone! This is exactly what the fan expects from his team in the World Cup,” Rivaldo wrote.
He also praised Messi for continuing to perform at the highest level at the age of 39.
“As for talking about Leo Messi, it’s a given. What a player! At 39 years old, playing his sixth World Cup in his career, he still shows the same passion for the Argentina jersey; he celebrates, he fights, he cries, and once again he is the decisive player.”
Rivaldo said he will always support Brazil. But he added that great football deserves respect no matter which team plays it.
“I am Brazilian, I love my country, and I will always cheer for the Brazilian national team. Competition is part of football, but I also know how to appreciate and admire when I watch a great match and a team that gives everything it has on the field.”
He finished by congratulating Argentina on reaching the last eight.
“Matches like these elevate the value of football, and they are worthy of the World Cup. Congratulations to Argentina on qualifying.”
Messi was emotional after the final whistle. He was seen in tears as Argentina celebrated one of the biggest comeback wins of the tournament.
Striker Lautaro Martinez said the team wanted to keep fighting for their captain.
“I told him on the pitch to enjoy it because he deserved it. I told him we would keep giving everything, for ourselves, but above all for him, because this is his last World Cup and he has given us so much.”
Julian Alvarez also praised Messi after the match.
“There really aren’t many words left to describe Leo. The World Cup he’s having is incredible; we try to help him, support him, and enjoy every moment alongside him. We’re also grateful for everything he does for us, and for the way he treats us. He’s a legend, the best player in the world, in history, so, yeah, that’s it.”
Argentina will now meet Switzerland in the quarter finals as they continue their bid to defend the World Cup title.
