Bangladesh’s women’s football team left for Australia on 19 February ahead of their maiden appearance at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, set to be held from 1–21 March.
The tournament marks the first time Bangladesh will compete at Asia’s highest level in women’s football, a landmark moment for the country’s rapidly rising programme. The squad, led by Rituparna and her teammates, departed at midnight with hopes of making an impression on the continental stage.
On the eve of the team’s departure, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to the players, coaching staff and officials on behalf of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
In a statement, he praised themfor their resilience and determination.
“Our girls have repeatedly shown that with hard work and an indomitable spirit, any obstacle can be overcome. Having moved beyond South Asia, they are now preparing to face the best teams in Asia. This is not only a milestone for women’s football but also a reflection of women’s empowerment in building a sports-friendly Bangladesh,” he said.
Bangladesh have been drawn in a challenging group alongside China, North Korea and Uzbekistan. Both China and North Korea are regarded as continental heavyweights, presenting a stern test for the debutants.
Despite the strength of the opposition, optimism remains high. The former national team captain expressed confidence that the players would rise to the occasion.
“I believe that on Australian soil you will uphold the honour of the red and green flag. Beyond results, your fighting spirit will showcase Bangladesh’s identity to the world,” he added.
