Leader of opposition in Parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has urged all stakeholders to transcend narrow partisan and political interests.
He made the remark on Thursday during an Iftar Mahfil organised for orphans at Mirpur 13 in the capital.
Expressing a vision for a transformed political landscape, the Jamaat Ameer stated, “One day, a prime minister will emerge from among these orphans. Jamaat-e-Islami is working to establish that political culture.”
He further noted that as a responsible opposition party, Jamaat intends to stand by the government to move the nation forward. He emphasised that they would point out the government’s mistakes and provide guidance through constructive criticism.
Shafiqur also spoke on the necessity of complete independence for the media and the judiciary. He characterised the dismissal of several journalists following the new government’s assumption of power as “shameless interference” by the state.
Iterating the party’s commitment to the public, he stated that Jamaat would stand on behalf of the country’s 180 million people against any activities contrary to their interests.
He added that as a responsible opposition, the party would provide full assistance to the government in its efforts to achieve national progress and build a corruption-free country.
“No situation, whether from the government or the opposition, will be allowed to occur that harms the people for the sake of political humanity,” he said, warning that the opposition remains prepared to build resistance should national interests be compromised.
He reaffirmed that Jamaat, as a political party, would support the government in every good deed.
While he expressed a desire for a cooperative relationship, he cautioned that resistance would be mounted whenever and wherever necessary, though he hoped such circumstances would not arise.
The opposition leader concluded by stating that while they wish to cooperate with the government, they will remain vigilant to ensure accountability to the public if national interests are endangered.
