The Revolutionary Workers Party has congratulated the BNP and its Chairman Tarique Rahman on their success in the National Parliament election, saying the polls have ushered in a rules-based democratic political trend in the country.
In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, Party General Secretary Saiful Haque said the election would further expand the liberal democratic political space in Bangladesh.
He expressed hope that Tarique, upon assuming the responsibility of head of government, would lead a democratic, progressive, pluralist and non-sectarian Bangladesh.
Saiful Haque contested the Dhaka-12 constituency with the spade symbol and secured 30,963 votes.
He was defeated by Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Saiful Alam, who contested with the scales symbol and won by a margin of 22,180 votes.
The party said that despite allegations in the constituency, including barring of polling agents, fake voting and inconsistencies in vote counting, it has accepted the result.
It also congratulated all other successful candidates.
The party said the election, held in the backdrop of the July mass uprising, and the subsequent formation of parliament would play a vital role in the country’s democratic transition through necessary reforms.
Saiful Haque thanked voters for participating in both the parliamentary election and the referendum and said active public engagement is essential to keep the government and parliament accountable.
While acknowledging shortcomings such as the influence of black money, he thanked the government, the Election Commission and relevant authorities for organising the voting in what he described as a festive and peaceful environment.
