Refrigerators run around the clock, through the night and through power cuts, to keep perishable food fresh and safe.
They are built for continuous use, but they still need care. A little cleaning and maintenance often makes the difference between a refrigerator lasting five years and one lasting fifteen.
Cleaning is one area where owners fall short. Many clean the refrigerator only when there is a spill. In practice, the shelves, drawers and door lining accumulate condensation and food remains over time. This can develop an odour even when the food inside is fine. A wipe now and then keeps the interior fresh and clean.
Overloading the shelves is another problem. It causes some items to end up warmer than they should while others freeze unexpectedly. Food that should stay fresh for days can start turning bad within hours even inside a fully functional refrigerator.
Modern refrigerators work differently. Samsung’s 700L Side by Side Refrigerator model RS72R5011B4 at Tk204,900 has a digital inverter compressor that adjusts continuously based on what is needed, so temperatures stay steadier without fluctuation, said a press release on Monday.
Its all-around cooling system spreads cold air evenly from corner to corner, so a shelf packed a little too full does not leave anything warmer than it should be. A deodorising filter keeps odours from settling in so the interior stays fresh for longer even without a wipe down.
A handful of smaller habits also help. Keep the door seals snug, defrost before ice builds up too much, avoid setting the temperature colder than needed and keep a few inches of clearance on each side and at the back of the refrigerator.
Small as they are, these practices add up to the difference between a refrigerator that runs smoothly for a decade and one that gives trouble far too soon.
