When preparing for a trip, most people focus on essentials: passport, phone charger, clothes, and making sure bags stay within the weight limit. But a recent Instagram trend shows some travellers adding an unusual step to their routine wrapping tape around their suitcase wheels.
At first glance, the idea seems odd. Why cover the very part of the bag designed to roll smoothly? Yet this practice has gained attention online, with travellers claiming it offers practical benefits during a journey. The trend raises curiosity about how taping luggage wheels might help and why more passengers are adopting it.
How does tape help suitcase during travel
Suitcase wheels are constantly exposed to the ground. As travelers move through airports, train stations, pavements, or dusty streets, the wheels collect dirt, dust, hair, and other debris.
The idea behind the hack is simple. Wrapping tape around the part of the wheel that touches the ground creates a temporary protective layer. At the end of the trip, the tape can be peeled off, taking much of the accumulated grime with it.
Attention to suitcase wheels may be more important than many travelers realise. A 2025 study by travel insurer InsureandGo, conducted with microbiologist Amy‑May Pointer, found that wheels were the dirtiest part of the luggage tested.
Researchers measured about 400 colony‑forming units per 3 square centimeters on suitcase wheels, nearly 58 times higher than the bacteria levels on a public toilet seat used for comparison. The study examined 10 suitcases at a London airport train station.
Does the hack really work?
The tape trick can be effective, but only to a limited degree. Wrapping tape around suitcase wheels helps prevent some dirt and light grime from sticking directly to the wheel surface. However, it does not protect against wheel damage or issues with the internal mechanisms.
There are drawbacks too. If the tape is applied incorrectly — too thick, too loose, or uneven — the wheels may not roll properly, making the suitcase harder to move. Tape can also leave behind sticky residue, which may attract even more dust. For that reason, this method should be seen as a temporary fix rather than a substitute for regular cleaning and maintenance.
Travelers who try the hack should keep the tape confined to the rolling surface and remove it once the trip is over. For everyday care, the simpler approach is to clean the wheels directly and clear away hair or debris from around the axles.
