DC Studios has tapped filmmaker Francis Galluppi to write a new movie centred on John Constantine, the supernatural detective known for his expertise in magic and the occult, according to Deadline.

As stated by Deadline, the project remains in very early development, with no other creative attachments confirmed. DC Studios declined to comment on the report.

Nicknamed Hellblazer, Constantine first appeared in ‘The Saga of the Swamp Thing’ #37 in 1985. The character was created by writer Alan Moore and artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben. He is portrayed as a working-class British detective who navigates the supernatural world while relying on his knowledge of the occult and his talent for deception.

Keanu Reeves previously played a version of Constantine in Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film ‘Constantine’, which was set in Los Angeles. A sequel to the film has been in development for some time. Matt Ryan also portrayed the character in NBC’s ‘Constantine’ television series, which premiered in 2014 and ran for one season.

Galluppi’s appointment comes ahead of the release of ‘Evil Dead Wrath’, the seventh instalment in the ‘Evil Dead’ horror franchise and his entry into studio filmmaking. The filmmaker developed the original story for the project and presented it to franchise creator Sam Raimi and his team in 2024.

Galluppi previously earned critical attention with his debut feature, the crime thriller ‘The Last Stop in Yuma County’, which premiered at Fantastic Fest before being released by Well Go USA Entertainment.

Raimi has praised Galluppi’s ability to build tension and deliver intense violence, describing him as a filmmaker with uncommon control in his feature debut.
