The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is conducting regular intelligence operations and taking preventive measures to prevent acts of sabotage in the capital amid a recent spate of cocktail explosions.
Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Motijheel Division, made the remarks at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Monday.
Asked about the recent cocktail explosions and the police response, he said law enforcement agencies were regularly carrying out intelligence activities and taking preventive measures to prevent such incidents.
“When an incident occurs, we investigate it, identify those involved and take steps to bring them under the law,” he said.
Harun said the perpetrators of such incidents often adopt specific tactics, while the police have to oversee a wide range of activities across the capital.
“Regular rallies, processions, meetings and various protest programmes are being held in Dhaka. The police have to monitor these activities as well,” he said.
He added that banned organisations and groups whose activities have been prohibited were also attempting to organise various programmes.
“Many of these organisations have supporters. We have also received information that some people are hired to take part in such activities,” the DMP official said.
Police are conducting regular drives and arresting suspects in connection with such activities, he said.
Regarding recent incidents of sabotage in different parts of the capital, Harun said police were taking preventive measures as well as investigating incidents after they occurred to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
“There is no scope to say that the police are not taking action or that there is any weakness on the part of the police,” he said.
