Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has said that the ministry is planning to modernise the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC)’s Kaptai Lake Fisheries Development and Marketing Center through investment.

The adviser made these remarks during a briefing with journalists after inspecting the fish landing ghat, fish landing station, ice plant, and other activities of the BFDC at the Kaptai Lake Fisheries Development and Marketing Center in Rangamati hill district on Sunday.

“Our goal will be to explore how to modernise BFDC, especially the landing station, through investment. Once this centre is improved, it will accelerate fisheries resource development activities not only for Rangamati but for the entire country.”

The Fisheries and Livestock Adviser said, “It is extremely regrettable that, despite fisheries resources being highly important economically for Bangladesh, this BFDC centre is still in poor condition.”

She further stated, “The BFDC centre in Rangamati has been playing a vital role in fish harvesting, preservation, and marketing for many years. Processed fish from here is supplied to Dhaka and various other parts of the country. But despite this, proper attention has not been given to the infrastructure development of the institution. Therefore, the government will work to modernise the institution through investment.”

Later in the afternoon, the adviser visited the sanctuary adjacent to the Rangamati District Administrator’s bungalow and the sanctuary adjacent to the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) office, where she inquired about the overall condition of the sanctuaries, the breeding situation of fish in the conserved area, and the participation of local fishermen.
