At least 29 people, including several children, were injured in a series of attacks by a rabid dog in Nakla upazila of Sherpur on Wednesday. The dog also attacked six cattle grazing in fields during the rampage.
The incidents occurred between Wednesday morning and afternoon across various areas of the municipality, including Green Road, Daripara, and North Kayda. Locals reported that the dog ran erratically through these areas, biting anyone in its path. Later that afternoon, residents cornered the animal and beat it to death.
Among the injured are Riaz Ahmed, 20; Rayan, 5; Mim, 5; Jhinuk, 9; Sojib, 13; and Jihad, 9.
Of the victims, 15 are residents of the Green Road and Daripara areas, while 14 are from North Kayda village.
The injured were initially taken to the Nakla Upazila Health Complex for primary treatment, with those suffering from more severe wounds being referred to the Sherpur District Headquarters Hospital.
Dr Mohammad Golam Mostafa, Nakla Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed the incident, noting that such a high number of dog bite cases in a single day was unprecedented at the facility.
He stated that the hospital has provided necessary vaccines and primary care to all victims.
Dr Mostafa advised that in the event of a dog bite, the wound should be washed thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes before seeking medical attention as soon as possible.
Nakla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Jahangir Alam said that Anti-Rabies Vaccines (ARV) supplied by the Nakla Municipality are available at the hospital and are being provided to the injured free of charge.
He added that the municipality is also providing necessary cooperation if any additional medicines need to be purchased from outside sources for treatment.
