A 5.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Dhaka on Friday morning, shaking buildings for several unsettling seconds and sending residents scrambling into the streets.
The tremor, centred near Narsingdi, left cracks across ageing structures and briefly disrupted traffic in several parts of the capital.
Emergency crews fanned out quickly to assess the damage and assist evacuees, some of whom were injured in the rush to escape.
At least 10 people have been killed, with hundreds more hurt.
The quake underscored the capital’s deep vulnerability to seismic shocks —
a risk magnified by its dense population and the vast number of weakened, decades-old buildings crowding the cityscape.
