The Cabinet has given in-principle approval to a proposal to bring the Purbachal New Town project area under the jurisdiction of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and Dhaka WASA.
The decision was reached during a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday at 8:30pm, presided over by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Under this approval, portions of the project currently situated within Narayanganj and Gaziipur districts will now be incorporated into Dhaka district.
According to a press release issued by the Cabinet Division, the Purbachal New Town project, initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, was previously spread across the administrative boundaries of three districts – Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur.
This geographic fragmentation created significant administrative complexities, resulting in inadequate police coverage for the safety of residents and a lack of essential civic services from local government institutions.
Furthermore, as the area was not under a city corporation, Dhaka WASA services were unavailable.
To resolve these issues and ensure sustainable urban management, the Cabinet approved the proposal to bring Purbachal under the DNCC. This move will allow residents to access vital services, including birth and death registration, the issuance and renewal of trade licences, waste management, the construction and maintenance of roads and drains, streetlight maintenance, and mosquito control.
For the security of life and property, the Cabinet has also authorised the inclusion of the project area under the DMP.
Additionally, the entire project area has been placed under the jurisdiction of Dhaka WASA to ensure effective water supply and sewerage management.
The Cabinet Division further noted that the proposal to include parts of the project located in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj and Kaliganj Upazila of Gazipur into Dhaka district was considered logical for the sake of efficient land management and the expansion of civic facilities.
Relevant officials believe these decisions will finally end the long-standing sufferings of the residents of Purbachal New Town.
