The Dhaka Safe Food Court has fined Premium Sweets Tk6 lakh for selling adulterated ghee and tomato sauce that pose serious health risks.
Safe Food Inspector Md Kamrul Hasan of Dhaka South City Corporation confirmed the verdict on Wednesday.
He said the case involved non-branded tomato sauce sold at the confectionery chain’s Motijheel outlet in August. Laboratory tests found excessive preservatives in the sauce. Doctors warn that such chemicals can increase the risk of kidney disease and cancer.
Hasan said the ghee sold at the same outlet also failed safety checks. Tests showed it was made with substandard oil rather than dairy fat. Nutrition experts note that such adulterated ghee can raise the risk of heart blockage in children instead of supporting their brain development.
The Safe Food Court issued the fine after reviewing the lab results and inspection findings.
