Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested six people in Dhaka’s Paltan on Wednesday while they were preparing to commit a robbery by impersonating RAB members.
A microbus used by the robbers’ gang was also seized during the operation, said MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing at a press conference.
The arrestees are Shahid Majhi, Mamun, Mijan, Md Jewel Bishwas, Md Alamin Dewari, and Dipu.
Intekhab Chowdhury informed that a drive was conducted on Tuesday in the VIP Road area in Paltan based on secret information. A team from RAB-10 arrested the robbers at that time.
During the operation, they seized four coats bearing the word “RAB” four caps, five fake RAB ID cards, two handcuffs, two walkie‑talkie sets, and a pistol cover.
In addition, a baton stick, two extra number plates, and five smartphones, and Tk20,045 in cash were also seized.
The RAB official further said the six previously committed robbery in various parts of the country by impersonating RAB and other law enforcement agencies.
RAB further mentioned that around 2pm on Tuesday, Shahid Majhi and Mamun called the others to gather in front of Anand Bhaban at Paltan, and as per Mijan’s instructions, one Abul Kalam Azad brought his microbus.
When the accused boarded the microbus, Mamun supplied them with equipment to disguise themselves as RAB. At that time, they planned a robbery in the Sonargaon area of Narayanganj.
RAB also reported that there are 15 cases, including robbery and arms cases, against Alamin Dewari and Dipu. There are six cases, including robbery and narcotics cases, against Abul Kalam Azad who owned the microbus.
There are also 15 cases, including robbery, against Jewel. He used to recruit new members into their gang by luring them with promises of jobs.
Previously, police arrested Jewel for robbing Tk16 lakh by impersonating Detective Branch (DB) police in Sreenagar, Munshiganj. After getting out on bail on 27 November, he resumed robbery with the gang.
