In Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila, many families have postponed animal sacrifices due to prolonged power cuts caused by severe nor’wester damage to electricity lines.
Heavy Kalboishakhi storms and thunderstorms struck the area at around 8:00am on Wednesday. The storm damaged rural electricity infrastructure across multiple unions. Trees fell on main power lines and several electric poles collapsed, cutting supply across most parts of the upazila.
Although 36 hours have passed since the storm, most areas in Shibchar remain without electricity. Authorities restored power in parts of the municipality and nearby locations, but most villages remain in darkness.
The disruption has created major difficulties for people planning Eid sacrifices. Residents cannot run water pumps, and refrigerators remain off, raising concerns over storing sacrificial meat. As a result, several families in different areas have postponed their Qurbani.
Local resident Rezaul Hawladar from Saheberhat area said a tree fell on the power line in front of his house during the storm. “Officials from the rural electricity office came and asked me to clear the tree at my own expense before they could fix the line. I removed it early on Eid morning, but no one has come yet,” he said.
Shibchar Zonal Office Deputy General Manager of Madaripur Palli Bidyut Samity, Abhilash Chandra Pal, said the storm caused extensive damage to the electricity network.
He said full restoration would take time. “It will take a long time to repair all damaged lines and restore electricity in all affected areas,” he added.
