Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said that political will and international cooperation are essential for protecting the ozone layer.
“This is an example of when there is political will, international law can be effectively enforced,” she said, citing the adoption and implementation of effective international agreements, particularly the Montreal Protocol, the world has successfully controlled harmful chemical substances.
Speaking at an event marking World Ozone Day in Dhaka on Tuesday, Rizwana highlighted that the depletion of the ozone layer poses serious risks to human health, agricultural production, and biodiversity.
Rizwana also pointed out that this global success was possible because developed countries provided financial and technological support to developing nations. She stressed that a similar level of commitment and cooperation from developed countries is indispensable to tackle climate change.
“We want criticism to be taken positively and translated into effective action. Only by changing personal and institutional behaviour can we ensure a sustainable future,” she added.
