The body of a policeman was found hanging in a hotel room in the bus terminal area of Cox’s Bazar town on Friday afternoon.
The deceased identified as Ataul Kabir, 44, was a serving member of the Whykong Highway Police Station in Teknaf.
He was a resident of the Rajbari area in Pirojpur district’s Nesarabad upazila and the son of Abdul Khaleq Talukdar.
According to Jintu Barua, the manager of The Grand Dhaka Hotel, Kabir checked into Room 401 around 9pm on Thursday.
Concerns were raised when he failed to check out by the scheduled time of 11am on Friday.
After hotel staff received no response at the door, they informed the local Sadar Model Police Station.
Upon arrival, police entered the room and discovered the Kabir’s body hanging from a ceiling fan by a rope.
Authorities confirmed his identity through National Identity Card (NID) verification.
Mohammad Nurul Abshar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Whykong Highway Police Station, said that Kabir had been posted at the station for nearly a year.
The OC said Kabir had been struggling with “family issues” for the past four months, adding that colleagues had previously attempted to counsel him regarding these personal matters.
Kabir had recently returned to duty from a period of leave. “It is not yet certain whether he had planned this while returning from his home,” the OC said.
The body has been sent to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. While initial circumstances may suggest suicide, police emphasised that the exact cause of death will only be confirmed following the post-mortem report and a thorough investigation.
Kabir’s family has been notified of the incident and is currently traveling to Cox’s Bazar.
