An official of the Special Branch (SB) of police was injured after being stabbed by unidentified miscreants in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Thursday night.
The victim, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Osman Gani, is currently posted in the immigration wing of the Special Branch at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The incident occurred around 9:30pm on Road 4, C Block of Kaderabad Housing.
According to witnesses and police officials, Osman Gani was returning home with his wife Tanzina Sima and their only child after shopping at a nearby kitchen market when an unidentified man attacked him from behind with a knife before fleeing the scene.
Despite his injuries, the SI attempted to chase the attacker but was unable to apprehend him.
He was initially treated at a local clinic before being transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Hospital sources confirmed that the officer sustained a deep wound on a large portion of his back, which required at least 43 stitches.
Abdullah Al Mamun, assistant commissioner (AC) of the Mohammadpur-Adabor Zone under the Tejgaon Division, confirmed the matter on Friday afternoon.
He said, “Based on our initial investigation and conversation with the victim, the incident does not appear to be a mugging. We suspect it may have been linked to previous enmity.
Law enforcement agencies are currently working to identify and arrest those involved, and a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact motive behind the stabbing
