Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday reaffirmed that the July National Charter will be implemented in its entirety, warning that any attempts to incite instability or create anarchy over the issue will be firmly resisted.
Addressing a public rally at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University in Tangail, the Prime Minister alleged that opposition parties are attempting to orchestrate chaos surrounding the charter’s implementation.
He emphasised that the document, signed by political parties at the South Plaza of Parliament following an invitation from Muhammad Yunus, would be upheld in its “entirety – every word, every line and every provision.”
The prime minister also issued a stern warning against those attempting to obstruct the government’s public welfare initiatives, specifically mentioning canal excavation, as well as the Farmers’ Card and Family Card programmes.
He pointed out that the BNP, alongside the general public, would resist such moves.
Criticising the conduct of certain elements in Parliament, the prime minister noted that parties with minimal electoral mandates are now demanding that their views be prioritised. He further highlighted the inconsistency of the opposition, stating that some parties were initially hesitant to sign the July Charter, while another only did so following the election.
“Why did those who raise their voices about the July movement not sign it earlier if they had so much concern?” he questioned, reiterating the BNP’s commitment to fulfilling the charter’s mandates.
Reflecting on the recent Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 by-elections held on April 9, Tarique Rahman described the proceedings as generally peaceful, despite one or two minor incidents.
He noted the lack of major complaints in national media and the calm atmosphere in those constituencies, but pointed to rising tensions near Baitul Mukarram as a sign of deliberate destabilisation.
The Prime Minister urged the public to remain vigilant against the “ghost of authoritarianism” and those seeking to spread confusion to hinder democracy. “This Bangladesh is our final home… we must build it together with the people and create the Bangladesh we aspire to see,” he said.
The rally was attended by Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, and Abdus Salam Pintu, MP, among others.
Prior to the event, the Prime Minister visited and offered prayers at the grave of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani in Santosh. He later departed Tangail for Dhaka by road.
