Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani triggered a fresh franchise tug-of-war after ditching the Pakistan Super League for the Indian Premier League. Islamabad United secured the seamer earlier, yet Muzarabani now heads to Kolkata Knight Riders, prompting the Pakistan Cricket Board to consider legal action.
The drama kicked off after the IPL champions’ rivals from Kolkata snapped up the towering quick ahead of the new season. That move instantly forced Muzarabani to abandon his PSL commitment with Islamabad United.
Islamabad had recruited him as a direct replacement for Shamar Joseph, handing the Zimbabwean a contract worth 1.1 million rupees. The franchise expected pace, bounce and a reliable strike option through the middle overs.
Muzarabani instead picked the IPL spotlight. The paceman reportedly informed Islamabad United about his withdrawal, a decision confirmed through cricket sources and reported by ESPNcricinfo.
The PCB reacted sharply. Pakistani outlet Geo Super reported that the board now weighs legal action against the bowler, arguing that franchise contracts carry binding obligations.
That response follows an increasingly familiar storyline. The PSL and IPL again share the calendar window this season, forcing overseas players to choose between the two leagues.
A similar dispute erupted earlier when South Africa’s Corbin Bosch abandoned Peshawar Zalmi after receiving a late IPL call-up from Mumbai Indians. The PCB hammered Bosch with a one-season PSL ban, signalling that contract breaches carry consequences.
Muzarabani now risks the same punishment. Islamabad United already lost their planned pace spearhead, while the PCB wants to protect the league’s credibility.
The irony sits elsewhere. Kolkata Knight Riders previously released Bangladesh seamer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad following BCCI directives, only to circle back months later and recruit Muzarabani.
That decision now drags another bowler into the IPL-versus-PSL power struggle. With both leagues colliding on the calendar again, every overseas contract now carries the same warning: sign twice, choose once.
