Patrick Vieira has left his role as Genoa head coach by mutual consent on Saturday, with the team sitting bottom of Serie A after failing to win a league match this season.
The former Arsenal and France midfielder took charge of the Italian side in November 2024. Under his management, Genoa have struggled in the current campaign, suffering six defeats in nine league games, including five losses in their last six outings. Their only two wins this season have come in the Coppa Italia.
A short club statement confirmed that Vieira “was no longer the coach of the first team”. A source close to the 48-year-old told BBC Sport that he had initiated discussions with the club on Friday night, which led to a mutual decision to part ways.
Vieira initially joined Genoa when they were 17th in Serie A and helped them avoid relegation last season, winning eight and drawing nine of his 26 matches to guide the club to a 13th-place finish.
“The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown throughout their work and wishes them all the best for their future careers,” the statement added.
During his playing career, Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups with Arsenal, as well as domestic trophies with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester City. He was also part of the France squads that lifted the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
After retiring in 2011, Vieira began his managerial career with New York City FC in 2016 before moving to Nice, where he guided the French club to seventh in Ligue 1 in his first season. He was dismissed in December 2020.
The former midfielder became Crystal Palace manager in 2021 and led them to the FA Cup semi-finals, but he was sacked in 2023 following a 12-game winless run. He later joined RC Strasbourg as their first head coach under new ownership group BlueCo, which also owns Chelsea, before leaving by mutual consent in July 2024.
