Bangladesh Bank (BB) has set a maximum fee of Tk300 for passport endorsements by licensed money changers, aiming to regulate service charges for travellers.
The central bank issued a circular on Wednesday detailing the new limit.
Under the Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Transactions (GFET) 2018, licensed money changers can sell foreign currency notes, coins, and traveller’s cheques to outgoing Bangladeshi residents within their annual private travel entitlement.
Each transaction must be recorded in the traveller’s passport and air ticket and verified with the authorised staff’s seal and signature.
To ensure transparency and prevent overcharging, BB has instructed money changers to display the endorsement fee clearly at their premises and provide a written receipt for each transaction. Establishments must maintain proper records of all fees for auditing and regulatory purposes.
The circular, signed by Monoar Uddin Ahmed, Director of FEPD-2, confirmed that all other foreign exchange transaction rules remain unchanged.
The regulation aims to streamline the passport endorsement process and protect passengers from arbitrary charges during currency exchange.
