The northern district of Panchagarh has recorded the country’s lowest temperatures for eight consecutive days, plunging locals into severe cold.
On Friday at 9:00am, Tetulia recorded 8.5°C, the lowest in Bangladesh at the time. Humidity stood at 89 percent, with winds blowing at 8 to 10 km per hour.
Tetulia Meteorological Office acting officer Jitendra Nath Roy said, “At 9:00am today, the temperature was 8.5°C, the lowest in the country. This marks the eighth straight day Tetulia has registered the lowest temperature nationwide.” He warned that temperatures could fall further.
Residents report thick fog covering the district from early morning until noon in some areas, with sunshine barely breaking through.
Fog density increases in the evening, causing minor disruptions on roads and highways.
Low-income residents are hit hardest by the severe cold. Daily wage earners, tea workers, and stone labourers struggle to attend work.
Hospitals have also seen a rise in cold-related illnesses in recent days.
