Bijoy Chowdhury, best known for playing Roich in the Liberation War film ‘Hangor Nodi Grenade’, has been hospitalised after suffering a heart attack. The actor is currently receiving treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital.
His son Sabid Bin Abu Azad Chowdhury said doctors admitted Bijoy to the post-cardiac care unit (PCCU) after the heart attack. The actor’s daughter, Fiona Islam, has also asked everyone to pray for her father’s recovery.
In a Facebook post, Fiona wrote, “My father Abu Azad Chowdhury (Bijoy) is currently very ill. He has been admitted to the Institute of Cardiology and is undergoing treatment. Please pray for my father. May Allah grant him a speedy recovery and protect him from all dangers. I sincerely request everyone to pray for him. May Allah make my father completely healthy and return him to us. Ameen.”
Speaking to the media on Friday morning, Sabid said his father had travelled to Singair on Thursday to attend a nephew’s invitation. Soon after arriving there, Vijay developed severe chest pain. His family quickly brought him back to Dhaka and took him to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, where doctors confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack. He remains in the PCCU under treatment.
Directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam, ‘Hangor Nodi Grenade’ was based on novelist Selina Hossain’s novel of the same name. Released in 1997, the Liberation War film remains vivid in viewers’ memories nearly three decades later. Roich’s sacrifice in the final part of the film remains one of its most emotional moments. Vijay’s performance in the role brought him widespread recognition.
Vijay was only 22 when he played Roich. Born in 1973 after Bangladesh’s independence, he was named Bijay. More than two decades later, audiences still largely remember him by the character’s name.
