More than a hundred garment workers were injured in Gazipur on Friday after panicking during the earthquake and rushing downstairs from an industrial building at the same time.
The incident took place at Danny Mac Garments in the Gargaria Masterbari area of Sreepur, where thousands of workers tried to evacuate the multi-storey factory simultaneously as the tremor struck.
Abdul Barik, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said several factories were open despite it being Friday. When the earthquake hit, workers scrambled to get out, leading many to slip on the stairs and others to fall in a stampede, leaving over a hundred injured.
Local residents and fellow workers rescued the injured and transported them to nearby hospitals. Several of the victims were reported to be unconscious at the time of rescue.
