A video from a Dhaka school, showing a child being assaulted and threatened in a room, has circulated widely across social media platforms.
The viral CCTV footage, timestamped at 12:51pm on 18 January, originates from the capital’s Nayapaltan area.
In the footage, a woman clad in a pink saree, allegedly a teacher, is seen forcibly pulling a boy aged about four or five years into a school room. The uniformed child is then presented before a man seated at a desk, also believed to be a teacher.
In the disturbing sequence, the woman repeatedly slaps and scolds the terrified child on a sofa. The situation escalates as the man approaches the boy holding a stapler and threatens to staple his mouth shut. Throughout the ordeal, the child is shown weeping in distress, while the woman appears to smile.
The video was publicly shared on Facebook by Advocate Saleh Uddin, who described the incident as an “example” of disciplinary practices at the academy.
In his post, he advised parents to remain vigilant and appealed for prompt intervention from relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Education.
Paltan police confirmed preliminary inquiries and said that law enforcement officials have contacted the victim’s family.
According to the police, they will decide after discussions with the victim’s family. If an FIR is filed, a case will be registered, they said.
According to a Supreme Court judgment in 2011, corporal punishment in schools is a violation of children’s constitutional rights. A Ministry of Education circular banned it in schools that year.
