One person has died and eight others have been injured after a stampede during a large public gathering in central Amman while fans watched Jordan’s World Cup match against Algeria, according to the Jordan News Agency citing the Public Security Directorate.
The incident took place at Hashemite Square, where thousands of supporters had gathered to follow Jordan’s 2-1 defeat. Emergency services transported nine people to hospital after heavy crowd congestion and sudden movement in the crowd led to a crush.
One of the injured later died in hospital, while the remaining eight sustained minor to moderate injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Hashemite Square and nearby public areas have been hosting large fan gatherings during Jordan’s first World Cup campaign, with matches shown on big screens across the capital.
Jordan suffered their second consecutive defeat in the tournament, following a 3-1 loss to Austria in their opening match, while Algeria secured their first win after an earlier defeat to Argentina.
Officials said further inquiries are underway into how the crowd movement escalated into a fatal crush.
