Michael Olise scored one goal and set up another as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to win the German Supercup on Sunday.
The France international played a key role in Bayern’s first trophy of the new season. He caused Dortmund problems throughout the match with his runs from the right side.
Bayern took the lead in the 28th minute. Olise drove forward before he was brought down near the Dortmund box. The loose ball reached Nathaniel Brown, who calmly found the net.
Dortmund thought they had drawn level later in the first half. Ramy Bensebaini headed in a cross from Julian Ryerson, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Bayern then doubled their lead just before half time.
Olise took advantage of a poor backpass from Jobe Bellingham. He held off the Dortmund defence before finishing to make it 2-0.
Dortmund improved after the break and put Bayern under pressure for long periods. However, Bayern’s defence stood firm.
The visitors also had a chance to score a third. Olise found Harry Kane in a good position, but the England striker fired over the bar.
Dortmund finally got their reward with 15 minutes left. Fabio Silva scored from Daniel Svensson’s cross after good work from debutant Giannis Konstantelias.
Silva later had another chance to equalise, but his header went straight to Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Dortmund’s hopes suffered another blow in the final minute when Bensebaini received a red card for a challenge on Bayern debutant Ismael Saibari.
The hosts still had one final opportunity to force an equaliser. Maximilian Beier went through against Neuer but sent his effort over the bar.
Bayern held on to secure the trophy for the 12th time.
“It’s a magnificent victory to kick off the season,” Kane told Sky. “Winning the trophy away at our league rival’s home stadium is, of course, a great start to the season.”
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was also pleased with his team’s desire after their success last season.
“Some people maybe think we’ll have a drop because we won everything last year. But that won’t be the case, we won’t rest and will try to win everything,” Kompany said.
The victory gives Bayern a strong start to the new campaign, while Dortmund were left to regret their missed chances late in the match.
